What I Do
Psychotherapy & Counselling
what's the difference?
They are similar in that they are both forms of ‘Talk Therapy’.
During psychotherapy and counselling, the therapeutic relationship that develops between the client and therapist is central to the success of working together. However, it is the work that’s conducted within that space that is different.

COUNSELLING
Counselling is generally short-term in nature and quite structured. In counselling, we deal with specific issues from your current life, agreed upon in the first session. The work together usually lasts anything from a few weeks to a few months.

PSYCHOTHERAPY
Counselling sometimes reveals that the issue you’re dealing with is long-standing, perhaps deeper than you first thought or more complex. Psychotherapy goes deeper, and helps in those cases. Psychotherapy could last anything from a few months to several years. Some clients start with counselling for a specific issue and after a while decide to continue on with longer-term psychotherapy.
Typical issues I help with are
- Depression
- Abuse
- Conflict & Bullying
- Relationship Issues
- Poor Self-Confidence
- Inner Child Work
- Compassion Fatigue
- Family Carer Stress
- Anxiety
- Grief and Loss
- Coping Skills
- Women’s Issues
- Life Transitions
- Panic Attacks
- Carer Burnout
This is just a sample list. If you’d like to have a chat with me to see whether I can help you deal with what’s bothering you then please feel free to contact me in confidence and we can talk about it.

How are therapy sessions provided
In Person - Face to Face Therapy
- Pearl Counselling, 6 Railway Street, Balbriggan, North County Dublin – Book to arrange an appointment
Online - Therapy via Video or Phone
Experience and several different international studies have shown that online therapy is just as effective as face-to-face treatment. It’s surprising how well this works. It’s different, but it’s not less. Many of my clients find it easier to open up about their previous experience of trauma online than they do face to face.
Secure and Private
Life isn’t always straightforward. Perhaps you’ve decided that you’d benefit from therapy but for some reason you can’t make it to my practice rooms, that’s ok. We can conduct our sessions either by video link using a telemedicine platform called doxy.me or by phone (if preferred.). Doxy.me is HIPPA and GDPR compliant telemedicine software. State-of-the-art security and end-to-end encryption ensure data integrity and privacy.
You won’t need to download software. You’ll click on a meeting invitation link that I’ll email to you. You can access this from either your laptop or smart phone.
Fees
All remote therapy fees are paid before the session begins. There’s a payment portal on this website to facilitate payment. If you prefer, I can send you my BIC & IBAN numbers for inter-bank transfer. You’re free to pay each week or several weeks in advance, whichever suits you best.
Please feel free to contact me if this approach appeals to you and I’ll talk you through how it works and answer any questions you may have about it.
